People have certain thought patterns that they have picked up from society at large, from their parents, from groups and organizations, etc. They then project these thought patterns onto their environment. And then they mistakenly believe that their own projections and interpretations are the "truth". But the truth is different for everyone, depending on their particular thoughts. That is why there is so much diversity in today's world.
Thoughts become things
A central component of spiritual growth is to eliminate all the thought patterns we picked up when we were young. These were programmed into us. It is when we learn to eliminate and reinstall different thoughts and beliefs that we begin to enter into our true autonomy as masters of our minds.
